The Lymph Node
On this day, last year, my mom was in the hospital. The doctors had ruled out pancreatic cancer, so they were ready to release her. They said that she should follow up with her primary care doctor. My mom was flabbergasted, as they had not addressed her pain. She went to the hospital because of the lump in her groin. It had gotten bigger, and the pain had gotten worse. She said that she needed answers before she was sent home. A young resident suggested that it could have been a swollen lymph node. That would have indicated an infection. Based on their knowledge and experience, the doctors decided to look for bacteria in the systems that surrounded the affected lymph node. A colonoscopy, an abdominal ultrasound with contrast, and a panel of blood tests were ordered.
